Adobe Lens Profile Creator
Adobe Lens Profile Creator is a free utility that enables the easy creation of lens profiles for use in the Adobe Photoshop® family of products.
The Adobe Lens Profile Creator application is a characterization application. It is designed to model (characterize) the optical behavior of your chosen photographic system. Since it draws this model from a set of final output images, the model will ultimately represent the optical data as modified by the full photographic system. The Adobe Lens Profile Creator application is a characterization application. It is designed to model (characterize) the optical behavior of your chosen photographic system. Since it draws this model from a set of final output images, the model will ultimately represent the optical data as modified by the full photographic system.
Specifically, Lens Profile Creator characterizes 3 common types of lens aberrations* :
| Geometric distortion | |
|---|---|
| An optical aberration that bends the light rays that pass through the lens, particularly along the periphery of the image plane, to create a distorted-looking image. The most common forms of distortion are referred to as ‘ barrel distortion ‘ and ‘ pincushion distortion ‘, because of the characteristic shape of the distortion as it appears in the image. | To go further ¬ Distortion (optics), From Wikipedia ¬ Geometric Distortion, Dave Baxter – Space Telescope Science Institute |
| Lateral chromatic aberration | |
| An optical aberration that gives the appearance of color fringing, particularly along high-contrast areas of the image. This aberration is caused by different wavelengths that make up white light being magnified at different positions of the same focal plane. | To go further ¬ Chromatic aberration, from Wikipedia ¬ Chromatic aberrations, by Paul van Walree |
| Vignette | |
| Light falloff at the periphery of an image, giving the appearance of a darker border along the edges of the image. | To go further ¬ Vignetting, from Wikipedia |

Process of creating a custom lens profile
1. Capture a set of checkerboard images using your specific camera and lens,
2. Convert the set of raw format images into the standard Digital Negative (DNG) file format using the Adobe Camera Raw processor,
3. Import the raw DNG images (or the JPEG/TIFF images if you prefer creating lens profiles for the non-raw workflow) in the Lens Profile Creator to generate the custom lens profile.
4. (Optionnaly) Submit the newly created lens profiles for your lens to share with the rest of the user community.
File formats
1. Lens design data interchange file format
Text based file format used to describe the lens aberrations generated from the lens design data.
Lens aberrations are :
¬ geometric distortion,
¬ lateral chromatic aberration and
¬ vignettting
2. Standard Adobe lens profile file format (LCP)
Format readable by Adobe® Photoshop, Adobe® Camera Raw and Adobe® LightRoom
