Adobe Flash Platform, Autodesk Homestyler and more !
Adobe Flash Platform
April was a great month for Adobe’s products users, fans and followers. But the suspens was kept until the end of the month! Indeed on 3oth Adobe announced a serie of new projects :
1. Adobe Dreamweaver Widget Browser
2. Adobe InDesign API Navigator
3. Adobe Photoshop CS5 FXG Extension
4. Adobe Lens Profile Creator
5. Adobe WorkflowLab
Adobe Dreamweaver Widget Browser
Adobe Dreamweaver Widget Browser is an AIR application for previewing and configuring widgets using a visual interface. The 3 main features of this AIR application are :
¬ Preview and download OpenAjax widgets available on the Adobe Exchange. As you may know the OpenAjax Alliance is an organization of leading vendors, open source projects, and companies using Ajax that are dedicated to the successful adoption of open and interoperable Ajax-based Web technologies. The OAA Widget Metadata specification describes how to create the XML file for a widget, as well as a widget’s dependencies, markup, and options. It’s also possible – as developer to create its on widget. For that read the Adobe Widget Browser Developer’s Guide.
¬ Add widgets to Adobe Dreamweaver
¬ Export and package widgets for use in any other HTML editing tool.
Coupled with Dreamweaver and the suite CS Live service BrowserLab, Adobe offer to developers a complete set of tools to develop AJAX applications. Do we have to understand that Adobe is present as never before in the RIA competition, even without Flash…
I widgetly recommend to download the Adobe Dreamweaver Widget Browser and to create your own widgets !
Adobe InDesign API Navigator
Adobe InDesign API Navigator is a new development tool for InDesign C++ plug-in developers. It works as an add-in for Visual Studio on Windows and as a plug-in for Xcode on Mac OS X. It helps developers get API information within the IDE directly, including Boss definitions, aggregating Bosses for interfaces, and ODFRC type definitions. It also adds syntax coloring for ODFRC files (.fr and .fh). Important advantage of this plugin are :
- Provides the ability to browse the API reference without leaving the IDE
- While debugging, provides a meaningful summary of data for some InDesign types, such as WideString, PMString, and others
But what really means all of this ? To understand most of these acronyms and barbarious terminology, I recommend you to read before the Adobe documentation :
Especially in the ‘How InDesign plug-ins are developed‘ section in , you will understand that ‘InDesign is written in C++ and makes heavy use of a resource compiler called ODFRC (Open-Doc Framework Resource Compiler). ODFRC files end with the “.fr” extension and are used for many things, including user interfaces, menus, and localization. ODFRC also is used to define and extend classes in the InDesign object model. These are not C++ classes, but rather an InDesign type of class called a boss. Working with bosses and instantiated boss objects is at the heart of InDesign plug-in development.’

Adobe Photoshop CS5
Adobe Photoshop CS5 FXG Extension
Adobe Photoshop CS5 FXG Extension aims at empowering Flash Catalyst and Photoshop collaboration. FXG describes an XML-based graphics interchange format for the Flash Platform.
Adobe® Lens Profile Creator
Lens Profile Creator is a free utility that enables the easy creation of lens profiles for use in the Adobe Photoshop® family of products, such as Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Camera Raw® and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom®. A lens profile describes the types of optical aberrations that exist in a particular lens and prescribes how to correct the lens distortions in an image captured from the same lens. Specifically, Lens Profile Creator characterizes 3 types of lens aberrations, namely the geometric distortion, the lateral chromatic aberration and the vignette. According to the LPC’s User Guide, these 3 aberrations are defined as below :
An optical aberration that bends the light rays that pass through the lens, particularly along the periphery of the image plane, to create a distorted-looking image. The most common forms of distortion are referred to as “barrel distortion” and “pincushion distortion”, because of the characteristic shape of the distortion as it appears in the image.
Lateral Chromatic Aberration
Once Adobe Lens Profile Creator downloaded, you may used the samples images by opening them in a new project, you should obtain this interface :

WorkflowLab is the Adobe’s workflow planning utility, an Adobe AIR application that provides an way to learn about and share workflow best practices. Among the new features [read Release Notes for more details] released in this Beta 2 version, I would say that the most important are :
1. Agile Workflow Support
2. Integrated Image and Video Viewer
3. WFX Spec and Schema
Another important feature is the availability of the alpha WorkflowLab WFX schema.
Finally note that WorkflowLab now includes the Squiggly library [dictionary text spelling], allows PDF export, has also updated Adobe products and technologies based on Creative Suite 5, Flex 4, and other related products and technologies, supports AIR 2.o SDK (which takes advantage of runtime performance) and so on.
I strongly recommend WorkflowLab application !
But few days before the announcement of these 4 projects, Adobe announced 2 others project releases :
Flash Player “Gala“
On 28th apil 2o1o, Adobe announced the Flash Player “Gala” preview. This version of the Flash Player introduces support for H.264 video hardware decoding on Mac OS X 10.6.3. The player takes advantage of the new Apple API for this encoding. May the so agressiv competition between Apple and Adobe give birth to exceptional technologic result…?
Adobe PDF Test Toolkit
On 22nd april, Adobe announced the PDF Test Toolkit prerelease 2. APTT enables enterprise customers to automate the testing of the Acrobat family of products.
APTT enables enterprise customers to automate the testing of the Acrobat family of products, particularly when used with LiveCycle and SAP. The initial focus is to enable LiveCycle and SAP users to leverage HP’s Quick Test Pro automation capabilities to automate the testing of form workflows with Acrobat and Reader running as standalone applications or within a browser.
If you are interested, download APTT and try it !
Autodesk Homestyler is an online home design software to create and share home design ideas for kitchen, room addition or interior design project. With Homestyler user may view floor plans and interior designs in 2D and 3D and save and share designs with friends.
I really recommend you to test this application !
